Streaming or direct playback

Audio options
Audio adds a lot to the experience, especially when it’s spatial. Meaning the sound changes with the direction you’re looking at. Look for a solution with spatial audio support to really add to the experience but at least choose one with stereo or 7.1 support

Platform & device support
Depending on the VR headset used it’s important that the software support the right platform and/or headset. For 360 video and photo playback we recommend the Oculus GO or Samsung Gear VR. Support for Android & GO are pretty must a much in today’s VR landscape. Also keep in mind how many devices you can connect and control at once.

Content management
Easy and fast management of your content is a real time saver. It’s very impractical to connect each device via USB and push your content manually. Especially when you have a lot of different or changing content or have to manage a lot of devices.

Playback control
Playing back in sync, to multiple devices is the foundation. Looking for additional features like looping, grouping or creating playlists can make your life a lot easier. Also the option to monitor playback will increase the level of control and lower risk.

Extra features
Extra features like branding, subtitles and playback from are for most nice to have. Not a must have. Determine if the added value ways against the costs or lacking of other features.

Most solutions offer different pricing options but all are based on a time based license fee. Most offer support for a number of devices for a set amount. Determine how many devices you’ll need the most and then determine the most suited solution

While most solutions are made to be user friendly, things can and will go wrong. It’s important to determine the level of support which is offered. Is there an tutorial, FAQ and documentation easily available? Does the company offer (free) support and is it easy to contact them?

Another great feature is that the battery doesn’t drain when the GO is on standby. Meaning the battery level will stay on level much longer.  

Summing up; these the main reasons why we advise the Oculus GO:

Our software is suited for 360 video’s and photos. Once you’ve selected your 360 video content and chosen your VR devices you can start preparing for your VR event. VR Sync offers some great tools which are very helpful.  We’ve developed our own application which is available for most VR platforms and VR devices and can be downloaded in the relevant stores.

Testing with VR Sync

Once your content has been published to all your devices we advise running a test prior to the event. We advise running a so called stress test to see if your devices hold up continuous play of the content.  First, create a playlist of all your content using the remote found on the dashboard. Secondly set it to loop so it plays at least three times more than you plan showing the content. Lastly see how your devices hold up in terms of battery use, overheating and general playback. You can easily achieve this with VR Sync by first connecting all devices to the remote and then simultaneously playing the content.

Executing an VR Event with VR Sync

At the event itself you should take your time to properly set-up the hardware and do a final test. Turn on the devices and connect them to the WiFi or our VR Sync Box. Last mentioned is a local network with access points and server. This allows you to run VR Sync with just a power connection. After all devices have been connected you can easily check the battery status of each devices and run another final test.It’s always wise to have a couple of backup units should one of your VR Devices fail or battery die. We usually take 10% of the total amount als back up. Make sure these devices are on standby and connected so you can easily swap during the event. Once the show starts just press play on your remote to start synchronized VR playback. If you’ve followed all steps mentioned this should be the easy part!

Preparing your 360 content for your VR Cinema

Your 360 content should match the maximum specifications  You can check the specs of your content by right clicking it and selecting ‘properties. We’ve done extensive testing and recommend not exceeding the following.

After checking the specs make sure there are no editing errors and the sound is in Sync. You can easily do this with a player like the GOPRO 360 player. Also check all your content on your VR device. Upload the content via USB and use the native media player on your device and watch the 360 content from beginning to end.

Testing your 360 content with a sync solution

We advise stress testing your 360 video’s with your devices. This can be done by playing it in sequence, looping it. With the native media players this is tedious work. We advise using specialized software like our own VR Sync. This allows you to easily test your content by following these steps.

Since no VR headsets offers the possibility to play content in Sync with other headsets it’s necessary to use specialized software. For high quality 360 video playback for a large audience a broadband connection alone will not suffice. Not only is the internet speed most likely too limited. For synchronized VR any buffering or lag will break the sync between devices.

Choosing the right VR headset for your content

Going on the assumption that you probably need to synchronize 360 video content we advise using the Oculus GO. It has a great screen, sensors and battery which can play 360 video’s at resolution of 4096 x 2048 resolution at staggering 70 frames per second. The battery lasts for almost 2,5 hours when continuously playing 360 content. A high comfort level as well as easy handling and charging makes it the best VR headset available.

The second choice would be the Samsung Gear VR. Offering a good experience with a similar resolution but a lower 30 FPS and bitrate. While the battery live is similar it has a higher chance of overheating and is less user friendly in handling and charging. To top it off, it’s twice as expensive as the Oculus GO. The latter going for 220 euros.

You could also go for a branded Google Cardboard with an Android device. The experience is not to be compared with the GO or Gear but its cheap and it works.

At the moment the best mobile VR headsets is the Oculus GO. All necessary hardware is included and it offers the best experience in terms of quality, comfort and handling. The second best choice is the Gear VR. It offers a good experience with a screen resolution similar to the Oculus GO and comparable level of comfort and battery life. It costs twice as much has issues with overheating and can handle a lower FPS and bitrate.  Below you’ll find a comparison of the two.

If you already have access to Android devices you can also use a generic VR headset like a Google Cardboard or one of the many plastics VR devices. These offer a cheap solution but the quality of the video playback, comfort and general experience also feels less high end.

How to prepare your 360 video and headsets

Once you’ve selected your mobile VR headset it’s time to prepare them for synchronization. The first step is downloading the VR Sync app on each device, it can be found on the relevant app stores. Assuming you’ve choose 360 video the second step is checking if the content matches the recommended settings, featured above. You can check the specs of your content by right clicking it and selecting ‘properties’.
